European Union calls Iranian strikes against Israel 'extremely worrying'

The Iranian regime's deployment into Syria of offensive rocket and missile systems aimed at Israel is an unacceptable and highly risky development for the entire Middle East. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) bears full responsibility for the consequences of its reckless actions, and we call on the IRGC and its militant proxies, including Hizballah, to take no further provocative steps.

The US further urged Iran and its proxy armies, including Hezbollah, not to take any further "provocative steps". "Syrian missile batteries fired surface-to-air missiles at us and we hit them".

"We all know that comes from the Al-Quds drive", military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Conricus stated, referring to the particular forces unit affiliated with Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard.

Israel has been on heightened alert in recent days, anticipating an Iranian attack following Iranian vows to retaliate to what it says are recent Israeli strikes in Syria targeting Iranian outposts.

"If we get rain, then they will get a flood", the defense minister said.

The Israelis said it was Iran's first direct rocket attack against Israeli targets.

Israel's military went on high alert Tuesday and bomb shelters were ordered open in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights following reports of "irregular activity of Iranian forces in Syria".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that the IDF will not hesitate to strike the Syrian Army if attacked by it.

The two sides have been on a collision course for months.

Iran made no comment about the rocket fire.

Germany's Foreign Ministry termed Iran's attacks on the Golan "a severe provocation that we most strongly condemn".

Israel carried out the raids after it stated 20 rockets, both Fajr or Grad sort, have been fired from Syria at its forces within the Golan Heights at round midnight. He said it will not allow Iran to turn Syria into a forward military base against the Jewish state.

Iran is one of the most powerful backers of Syria's president, Bashar Assad.

Earlier, the IDF stated that its fighter jets had attacked purported Iranian positions in Syria, having fired dozens of missiles at Syria in retaliation for an alleged bombardment by Iran. "This is what we have done and this is what we will continue to do", Netanyahu said in the statement.

Russian analyst Fyodor Lukyanov said relations between Putin and Netanyahu were "very good" and that the meeting, on the eve of the strikes, showed Russia could play a major role in the Israel-Iran dispute.

Israel captured the Golan Heights in the 1967 war, annexing it in 1981 in a move not recognised internationally.

Israel might attack airports in Lebanon, Syria and even Iraq to prevent the movement of Iranian troops and equipment. President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the worldwide nuclear agreement with Iran, with strong support from Israel, has further raised tensions. Additional US priorities in Syria are advancing the "political process" (i.e. global efforts to broker a permanent peace agreement) and deterring Assad from the use of chemical weapons, he said. "These matters are very important to Israel's security at all times and especially at this time", he said.
