A walk through the history of the Met Gala...in Rihanna's shoes

A walk through the history of the Met Gala...in Rihanna's shoes

Tonight, only in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, fashion's most prominent people will join Hollywood's A-list for a lavish night of celebrating fashion, art, good company and the moments that will add to the annual Gala's iconic history.

The entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art will once again be transformed into a runway. But as a newly anointed patron, this year's gala will be a pivotal one.

This year's theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination", will no doubt see fabulous interpretations and faux pas. Social media was in its infancy in 2008, and despite the inherent glam of the Met Gala, the stakes for having a wow-factor look were low.

Ann Wintour has say over who attends each year's Met Gala. The dress code is an accurate reflection of the event's fundraising clout - a handsome $12 million was donated at last year's gala. Meanwhile, Madonna, 59, documented herself on Instagram getting two long braids put in her blonde locks. While some shied away from the "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between" theme, RiRi was all in, sporting an eye-catching, avant-garde look off the Comme des Garçons Fall 2016 RTW runway. The theme for that year was "Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations".

We're waiting with bated breath to see what the event's all-stars - and by that I nearly exclusively mean co-host Rihanna, who should be canonized for her sartorial contributions - will show up wearing. Rihanna killed it! The theme for 2015's Met Gala was "China: Through the Looking Glass" and Rihanna did the theme justice by wearing a design by Guo Pei. Donning a black, beaded lace gown by Stella McCartney, Rihanna shimmered on the carpet and proved her sexy style was here to stay.

When Reese Witherspoon struggled with how to pronounce Cara Delevingne's name during a lift ride after they met on the 2014 red carpet: "I don't know what your f---in' name is". The "Stay" singer rocked an undo updo and understated makeup - letting her diamonds (including Jacob & Co. four-carat diamond studs and a 18k white-gold diamond choker and five rings) steal the show.
