The Congress too tried to woo UDP for the formation of the government in the state in the wake of the fractured mandate that emerged on 3 March. After P.A. Sangma's death in 2016, his son Conrad Sangma took over.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader noted that since one MLA out of every two MLAs of all supporting political parties will be a part of the new government, one MLA out of the two BJP MLAs will also be a part of it. Governor Ganga Prasad administered the oath of office and secrecy to them at a grand swearing-in ceremony held at the forelawns of the Raj Bhawan here.
Others in the cabinet are Prestone Tynsong, Comingone Ymbon and Sniawbhalanag Dhar from the NPP, Metbah Lyngdoh, Lahkmen Rymbui and Kyrmen Shylla from the United Democratic Party, Banteidor Lyngdoh and Hamletson Dohling of People's Democratic Front. "Our government is and will be committed to the people of Meghalaya and will work sincerely to resolve all the problems we are facing", he told reporters soon after his swearing-in. Surjewala wanted the BJP to clarify whether it shared the views of its alliance partners.
Shillong: The BJP's victory in the North East has changed the perception that only the Congress can survive there, home minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday. Eleven other ministers also sworn in at the ceremony.
The state is abuzz with talk of cabinet berth allotment and how Sangma would give representation to regional allies.
The formation of government in Meghalaya will also mark BJP rule in six of the seven northeastern states ever since it was voted to power at the centre in 2014.
The Congress was in power in Meghalaya for the last 15 years.
The regional parties' ruling alliance, Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) of ten years back, had a bitter experience as it collapsed exactly a year after its formation in 2008 because of differences among the allies that spun out of control of the then chief minister Donkupar Roy. After getting into power he had power, tourism and IT portfolios under him. He served as the leader of the opposition in the assembly from 2010 to 2013.
