In a shocking case that has embarrassed the state Congress unit ahead of the assembly polls, Mohammed Nalapad Haris (25), son of Shanthinagar Congress MLA N A Haris, and 10-15 of his cronies allegedly brutally assaulted an already injured 24-year-old MBA graduate at Farzi Cafe in UB City on Saturday night over a trivial issue.

However, although he was absconding, he reportedly went to the police station from his residence.

Describing the incident as unfortunate, the MLA had said that the law must take its course.

Meanwhile, a scuffle broke out between Nalapad's supporters and media personnel at the Cubbon Park police station. Police have also not invoked the grievous attempt to murder charges against Nalapad and have booked him for assault, wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation.

The assault reportedly began in a restaurant and continued at the hospital where the injured man was taken for treatment.

At the time of his surrender, there was a minor tussle between protesting BJP, JD (S) cadres and Congress supporters.

On his part, Home Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy visited the hospital and assured his family of arresting Mohammed Nalpad at the earliest.

Vijay Hadagali is close to MLA Haris and was suspended two years ago when he was police inspector of Vivek Nagar for not registering an FIR against Haris' associates for assaulting two policemen in front of police quarters. He said a Bharatiya Janata Party MP's son was also seen in the footage but was not named an accused.

"Yesterday my son spoke to his mother over the phone". Later, he promised to make him surrender before the Police. I have always been a law-abiding citizen and I am in no way involved in this case. This is all I ask. Now his father, NA Haris has come out in defence of his son and has said that leniency should be shown to his son on grounds of his immaturity.

Expressing shock over the incident, BJP State president B.S. Yeddyurappa tweeted "I am appalled at & strongly condemn the ghastly attack by MLA N.A. Harris's son on innocent Vidwat.@CPBlr Police must arrest the culprit and his goons to restore public confidence in rule of law".

It was speculated that he avoided arrest on Sunday as he would not get bail from court.
