Bezos and Gates have been fighting for the top spot for a while; Bezos was briefly the richest man in the world in July, before his share prices dropped a few hours later.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has surpassed Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates as the wealthiest person in modern history.

The majority of his net worth comes from the 78.9 million shares of Amazon stock he owns.

Still, of those individuals whose wealth is publicly traceable, Bezos is the richest person alive. The stock is up about 7% in 2018 after soaring 56% in 2017. Forbes reports that with inflation, that would be worth around a whopping $150 billion. That allowed Bezos, 53, who also owns the Washington Post and private space tourism company Blue Origin, to cross the $100-billion net worth mark in November. Shares of Amazon rose by 1.4 percent Monday, adding about $1.4 billion to Bezo's net worth, CNN reported.

Bezos surpassed Gates in October past year with a net worth of $93.8 billion and his fortune crossed $100 billion for the first time a month later when the holiday shopping season kicked off on Black Friday.
