Sam's Club in Seabrook closes Jan. 26

Reports are that the Sam's Club stores in Greece and Henrietta will close.

Some of the stores closed immediately Thursday, according to Business Insider.

The manager, who did not want to give his full name, said the store closures make sense, as Walmart does what is best for Sam's Club members and employees.

"Club is closed today so we could inform our associates so we gave them the day off and closed the club".

In a release Thursday evening, the business said they are closing 63 clubs around the country and converting 12 into eCommerce fulfillment centers.

The news came as Walmart announced it was raising wages for employees from $9 to $11 per hour, expanded maternity and parental-leave benefits, and offered employees a one-time cash bonus of up to $1,000.

Three Richmond-area Sam's Club stores remain open - one on West Broad Street in Henrico's West End, one on Wal-Mart Way in Midlothian, and one on South Park Boulevard in Colonial Heights.

They reportedly showed up to their Sam's Club workplace and found that its doors were locked and there was a notice announcing the closure. "Mayor Lary and Councilman Jimmy Clanton went to the Stonecrest Sam's Club for answers".

A Sam's Club spokeswoman Anne Hatfield spoke to WBRZ 2 in Baton Rouge about the closure of the Cortana store, calling the decision "very complex".

The chain, which competes with Costco, has more than 650 locations employing more than 100,000 people, with an average of 175 employees per store, according to the company.

The Sam's Club in Lumberton will be closed to the public beginning January 26, according to letter sent to the North Carolina Department of Commerce from Sam's Club corporate office in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Stores in Henrietta and Greece are also slated to close.
