Two people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a mother, two of her children and her female partner in Troy, New York, police said early Saturday.
Police in upstate NY have arrested two men in connection with the brutal murder of a lesbian couple and two children.
White, 38, and Justin C. Mann, 24, are each charged with one count of first-degree murder and four counts of second-degree murder. They also would not say how the defendants know each other, but said that both have records and Mann is on parole. Information given in court said the killings took place at about 9 p.m., December 21.
The pair pleaded not guilty and were ordered held without bail at Rensselaer County Jail.
Police have not released many details about the crime, but Tedesco said that there were indications that the family was targeted.
That said, a report via the dailybeast cited family members of the girlfriend, Mells, having been friends with Mann, who is now accused of butchering her and her girlfriend's family.
"After being in this business for nearly 42 years I can't describe the savagery of a person like this", Police Chief John Tedesco said this week as police searched for the killer.
Shanta's oldest son Isaiah Smith, 15, was away when the murder happened, and he is the sole survivor in the family.
"I don't have to tell you what a good feeling it is to have these two in custody", he said. "Something that they are trying to get their heads around.I can't say enough about the level of commitment and effort that law enforcement, some of who are here today have put into this case to get us where we are today".
"I'm scared to go to the corner store", he told reporters, according to the Times Union. It's not yet clear what led police to Mann and White.
