Four of the 22 people injured were brought to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, the spokesman said.
New York City fire department tweeted that over 200 fire fighters continued to fight the fire at 1547 Commonwealth Ave' in Bronx. "Now 16 non life-threatening injuries have been reported", read a tweet on the official Twitter handle of the department.
The fire is believed to have started around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in a furniture store in a four-story building, CBS New York reports.
It was also reported that at least 150 firefighters were battling the fire.
"Our units arrived and were immediately faced with heavy fire".
Another resident escaped with her two children and their dog.
That blaze started after a three-year-old boy was playing with a stove.
De Blasio called it the "worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city in at least a quarter century".
"They've all been transported, and they will all be ok, thankfully", he said, noting there were at least nine children among the injured.
