Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus Now Official: The First 18:9 Phones Under Its Budget Series

The Redmi 5 succeeds the much popular Redmi 4 smartphone, and it might launch in the Indian market in early 2018.

Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus cell phones were propelled by the Chinese producer at an occasion in Beijing on Thursday. They are not only the latest offerings from the company but also new additions to the Xiaomi's growing number of devices that is equipped with 18:9 full-screen display.

As for the cameras, both devices are treated equally and get a 12 MP rear camera and 5 MP selfie camera.

The Redmi 5 is priced around $120 for the 2GB RAM and 16GB storage model, whereas the 3GB RAM and 32GB version costs around $135. Their respective storage variants also vary from 16GB to 32GB.

These are definitely cheap phones by global standards, then, with the 5 Plus sounding like particularly good value. Their major feature is that bezel-less 18:9 display but it differs on both the devices.

The Redmi 5 comes in three color options, Rose Gold, Black, and Blue, and will go on sale in China starting December 12. Its connectivity features will be same as Xiaomi Redmi 5. It gauges 151.8 x 72.8 x 7.7 mm, and weighs 157 grams. Both the handsets come with full-screen displays and an 18:9 aspect ratio for an immersive media and gaming experience, keeping true to past rumours and pre-launch reveals. This smartphone packs in a 4,000mAh non-removable battery, while the phone measures 158.5 x 75.45 x 8.05mm, and weighs 179.5 grams. The phone will be offered in a choice of 3GB and 4GB of RAM with 32GB and 64GB of internal storage, respectively. Besides, the smartphone offers Dual SIM, 4G LTE, WiFi (802.11 b/g/n), Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, and a micro USB port.

The Redmi 5 Plus is powered by a massive 4000 mAh battery which, according to Xiaomi, has a standby time of up to 17 days.

As far as the camera is concerned, the handset features a 12MP rear-facing camera with LED Flash, f/2.2 aperture, PDAF while on the front, it has a 5MP snapper with LED flash. It is also powered by an 2.0GHz octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC coupled with Adreno 506 GPU. Storage can be expanded with a microSD card. The fingerprint sensor sits at the back of the device which has become a Redmi signature irrespective of thin or thick bezels.
