Vince, Stoneman hold England

Lyon caused a stir two days before the start of the series with an incendiary press conference, in which he claimed he was hoping to help end some England careers this winter.

Inexperienced Vince and Stoneman displayed doggedness as England recovered from the early loss of former captain Alastair Cook (2) who was caught by Peter Handscomb at first slip off left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc.

It was uncharacteristic stuff from the easy going Lyon, who has become a national hero in Australia thanks to his "Nice Garry" catchphrase.

Cummins may not believe the Gabba wicket will show life until the weekend but Vince believed Friday morning was the crucial session for the first Test.

Never before has Lyon had to deal with the pressure of facing up to a storm of his own creation, a unique challenge that doesn't suit every personality.

"At the start of the day, if you'd offered me 80, I'd probably have taken it", he said. I'm not going to stand back from what I said. "On a personal level, he said he had never felt more confident in his craft, having toiled for years to convince selectors of his value."My bowling is coming out the best it's come out".

Lyon also pulled off a stunning direct-hit run-out of danger man James Vince (83) on day one.

No one was arguing after Lyon was nearly unplayable at times in the Ashes opener in Brisbane.

Vince, who has previously played down under as an overseas star for Sydney Thunder, was spurred on to make a success of his Test comeback after hearing Hayden join the Australian chorus querying the global pedigree of the majority of the England team.

But Lyon said there was method behind his sledging madness. "My confidence has grown a large amount over the last 14 months".

"I have worked hard in the nets. and really nailed my consistency, really know my game inside and out and what works for me". I don't know how he doesn't have six-for, let alone one.

At the same time, he knew his role in the Australian cricket team, he added.

Whenever Australia's pace bowlers went too full, he played his trademark drives, scoring heavily through the covers and point.

Lyon was less chatty when asked about his Prior barb.
