Jimmy Garoppolo to make first 49ers start vs. Bears

49ers turn to Jimmy Garoppolo as starting quarterback

It's Jimmy G time: Garoppolo to make first start for 49ers Sunday

The team announced Tuesday that the recently acquired quarterback will start Sunday on the road against the Chicago Bears.

Jimmy Garoppolo officially got named the 49ers starting quarterback Tuesday, exactly four weeks weeks after arriving in a trade from New England and opening his press conference by saying: "Thrilled to be here right now".

He entered Sunday's game for Beathard with 1:07 remaining and connected with Louis Murphy on San Francisco's only touchdown of the game, a 10-yard throw in the corner of the end zone.

"I think we brought him here because we want him to being the quarterback of the future", Shanahan said when Garoppolo was introduced.

"He's gotten better", Shanahan said. Beathard was a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Beathard was injured in Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, which pressed Garoppolo into brief duty. The 49ers (1-10) play Sunday against the Chicago Bears (3-8) in Soldier Field, located about 30 miles from Garoppolo's hometown of Arlington Heights, Illinois. In two starts with the Patriots, he threw four touchdowns, zero interceptions, and had a rating of 120.8. His 110.1 career passer rating would rank second in the National Football League in 2017, only behind Brady (111.7).

Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers drops back to pass against the Seattle Seahawks at Levi's Stadium on November 26, 2017. Beathard was given the start against the Seahawks after the bye, completing 22 of 38 for 201 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

Beathard left the game Sunday with a knee contusion and a hip strain. Beathard went down with an injury.
