Arkansas fired athletic director Jeff Long on Wednesday according to multiple reports, leading to speculation that football coach Bret Bielema also could be on his way out.

Long has served as Arkansas' athletic director since 2008 and was the first chair of the College Football Playoff selection committee. But I know this, winning ball games helps everybody, so that's all I'm focused on.

With AP Photos.Arkansas has fired athletic director Jeff Long, ending a almost decade-long tenure that included the scandalous ouster of football coach Bobby Petrino and the continued mediocrity of the program under Bret Bielema.

Long previously headed the Athletic Department at the University of Pittsburgh.

The university will honor the provisions of Long's contract, which now runs through June 30, 2022. Demirel said Long was a driving force behind a $160 million expansion to Fayetteville's Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

Amid speculation of Bielema's fate as head of Razorback football, Demirel said fans want to see a local figure as head of athletics. "For our student-athletes, everything he stands for, everything he's tried to give them off the field, on the field, all the services we provide, all the support we've given".

Long is staying on the College Football Playoff selection committee, as announced in a statement by CFP executive director Bill Hancock on Wednesday afternoon.

Julie Cromer Peoples has been installed as interim athletics director.

The College Football Playoff selection committee decides the four teams that will have a chance to play for the national championship at the end of the regular season.
