It's worth noting that the team in the top spot of the initial CFP rankings has failed to win the championship, including Alabama last season.
Before being selected as the No. 1 team in the first College Football Playoff poll last week, the last time the Bulldogs were a top-ranked team was in the preseason AP and coaches polls in 2008.
The top five teams this week, as chosen by the 13-member selection committee, were identical to the top five teams a week ago, with Georgia (9-0) holding the No. 1 spot, followed by No. 2 Alabama (9-0), No. 3 Notre Dame (8-1) and No. 4 Clemson (8-1).
Washington (8-1) comes in at No. 9, and Auburn (7-2), the highest ranked two-loss team, is No. 10. The Crimson Tide jumped on LSU in the first half, taking a 14-0 lead and riding the fast start to a 24-10 victory.
"Guys, collectively, aren't really focusing on that", Davis said. No. 2 Alabama will play Mississippi State (7-2), which held down No. 16 for a second consecutive week, and No. 8 Wisconsin will welcome Iowa, which debuted at No. 20. No way the Selection Committee would drop them after winning the Bedlam Series over the in-state rival No. 15 Oklahoma State Cowboys (7-2). Having just messed with the Texas Longhorns, TCU is in a good spot at No. 6 where it can make the College Football Playoff if it wins out.
Without question, the two most important games when it comes to playoff ramifications are Oklahoma-TCU and Notre Dame-Miami. The Tigers are at No. 10 and still control their own playoff path.
The Hawkeyes and Cyclones are the best three-loss teams in the rankings, released on Tuesday evening. Michigan State and Ohio State, one of which will nearly certainly face the Badgers in the Big Ten title game, were ranked 12th and 13th, respectively. The Hurricanes will be in the top five next week with a win on Saturday.
