Goodell's absurd contract demands leak, and this is getting ugly

Indeed, the league office said this week that Goodell's contract, which will be worth over $200 million in total and run until 2024, should be formally completed soon, and acknowledged that, in response to his unusual actions, Jones was no longer allowed to serve as an ad hoc member of the Compensation Committee. According to one of ESPN's sources, Goodell is seeking $49.5 million per year, lifetime use of a private jet and insurance for life for him and his family in a new contract.

"That number for Roger just seems too much", an owner told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen.

"Roger is defiant", one owner told ESPN.

IJR previously reported that a conference call was held between National Football League owners where Cowboys owner Jerry Jones led in a direction of halting Goodell's contract. "It's offensive. It's unseemly".

Goodell reportedly makes around $30 million a year now, according to league sources and some are privately balking at the figure Goodell has responded with.

NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said Thursday that negotiations will continue despite the lawsuit threat and that the league has already authorized the committee to make an extension of Goodell's contract.

The biggest proponent to seeing Goodell eventually ousted as commissioner would be Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. "He can stand to show some humility, but he won't listen to staff".

Owners also feel that Goodell will not walk away and that he will not take less money. As PFW reported this week, Jones may have a half-dozen owners in his corner, while a larger group remains displeased with Goodell but isn't sure how to respond, and a growing faction is furious with Jones over his public handling of the NFL's private business.

Goodell found a friendlier outlet in The MMQB, which did not report the exact numbers but did suggest that Goodell has not only been open to accepting an incentive-laden deal, but he proposed one. "He has said he's committed to it". Despite no criminal conviction Goodell suspended Elliot for six games for breaking the NFL's personal conduct policy.
