Gareth Southgate has stated that the only way Jack Wilshere will return to the England squad is if he plays more matches for Arsenal.

"Chris has got 30 caps, he plays for Manchester United, so I know what he can do". Southgate explained that he can not pick a player who has not appeared regularly for his club, and he is right. I've gone into a rotation policy and I want to stick to that at the moment.

"There are some young players for whom this is a good opportunity". I know what Chris can do.

Asked if he felt Smalling was incapable of playing the ball out from the back correctly, Southgate replied: "No, I think he can". They are now performing in the Premier League and doing well.

Spurs midfielder Harry Winks was included after a fine debut in Lithuania, as was Manchester City's Fabian Delph.

"That's only going to build their confidence and benefit us as a country".

However, Southgate offered Wilshere hope, adding: "He is a top player".

However, Southgate has clearly had a change of policy as a lack of regular game time on Merseyside has worked against Oxlade-Chamberlain, whereas the likes of Abraham, Loftus-Cheek and Gomez have benefited from their regular appearances at club level. That's why I think the system suits him well.

Yet Wilshere has been left out of the squad to face Germany and Brazil.

One of those defenders is Gomez, who has been predominantly used at full-back for Liverpool, but whom Southgate believes could fit well into a back three. "We are nowhere near the highest scorers [in European qualification] and so we've got to address that, and part of that is being able to build and create chances", Southgate said.
