BMW adds lightness to the 2018 M3 with CS edition

For the environmentally conscious M3 CS drivers, claimed fuel consumption is 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle test, while carbon dioxide levels have been tested at 194 grams per km.

337kW and 600Nm. This is the M3 CS, the last word in "performance sedan".

BMW has announced the next model to join the M4 coupe in the freshly resurrected CS stable, with the mechanically related M3 sedan next in line for the go-faster enhancements. According to BMW, the M3 CS can get from 0-60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds, which sounds about exactly right, considering the Comp Pack can do it in around 3.8-3.9 seconds and the CS is a bit lighter and more powerful.

This means a 0-60mph time of 3.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 174mph.

It is around £25,000 more expensive than the M3 Competition edition and only slightly quicker and slightly modified styling. BMW fits the M3 CS with a special dual-branch sports exhaust system that has four outlets in the rear diffuser. The links and wheel carriers are all made from forged aluminum. These items contribute to a 10-kg weight saving over the regular M3. Five exterior body colours are available - Alpine White, San Marino Blue Metallic, Lime Rock Grey Metallic, Frozen Dark Blue II Metallic and Black Sapphire Metallic. Making the connection between vehicle and asphalt is a set of light-alloy wheels (19 inches up front, 20 inches at the back) wearing Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. BMW has also thrown in a snazzy, new set of lightweight, ten-spoke wheels wrapped in semi-slick Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubbers that are totally road-legal, officer, I swear. Besides that, this specially tuned M3 also gets its own unique suspension set up, as well as special interior touches to enhance the car's exclusivity.

As for how the vehicle rides and handles, numerous suspension components are formed from lightweight but strong aluminum to minimise unsprung weight.

Inside you'll find a smattering of Alcantara and the lightweight seats from the Competition Package.

Despite its sporty persona, the M3 CS still comes with creature comforts such as automatic climate control, a Harman Kardon surround sound system and BMW Navigation system Professional infotainment system.
