He was not called up to the most recent squad for this week's match with Germany despite a couple of dropouts and now, manager Gareth Southgate has explained why.

Hodgson worked with Wilshere whilst he was in charge of England, prompting newspapers to suggest he is keen to link-up with the 25-year-old again.

Southgate encouraged Wilshere to keep working hard at Arsenal and refused to rule out the possibility of including the midfielder in his World Cup squad.

"Jack played as a number 10 all of last season on loan at Bournemouth", Southgate was quoted as saying by Sky Sports on 9 November.

Home-grown Adams feels that was an important part of the Arsenal side that famously won the league in 1989, with the likes of David Rocastle, Michael Thomas, Paul Davis, Niall Quinn and Paul Merson all also having emerged from the club's youth team.

"We bought [Mesut] Ozil and these players".

"We need him both internationally and for the Arsenal", the former captain added.

"I don't think Jack is a 10". I am happy with where I am, playing-wise. "I will tell you who - his agent".

"You'd have to ask Arsene why he wasn't at Arsenal last year and you'd have to ask Eddie why he played him as a 10 last year".

Southgate's rationale was Wilshere had not played enough Premier League football this season. I think he is a talent and I really respect him as an individual.

"I really like Jack Wilshere as a player", he said. Wilshere has played a lot more this season that Drinkwater and more than the Tottenham left back Danny Rose who also got an England call-up.

Wilshere has made one assist in two substitute appearances in the Premier League but there is an increasing clamour for the Englishman to start ahead of want-away Mesut Ozil.
