Listeria concerns prompt recall of packaged vegetable products

A California company recalled dozens of its vegetable products, several of which can be found at Wal-Mart, Target and Trader Joe's, after a positive test for listeria.

Short-term symptoms of listeria include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Walmart: 12-oz. bags of broccoli cauliflower florets, broccoli florets and stir fry medley are being recalled, along with 32-oz. bags of broccoli florets, 16-oz. bags of broccoli slaw, 10-ounce bags of cauliflower florets and super blend, 16-oz. bags of cauliflower and 2-lb. bags of vegetable medley.

The notice was issued last week on the Food and Drug Administration's website.

Packaged vegetables are being recalled in multiple states across the US, including Texas, due to possible contamination from Listeria bacteria, which can cause fatal food poisoning in young children, pregnant women and elderly or frail people.

Concerned customers may call Meijer at 800-543-3704.

Triple-B is recalling broccoli florets, stir fry kits, veggie trays with cauliflower and veggie pack combos that were sold in store delis in Alaska.

The recalled products were sold throughout the USA and Canada with "best if used by" dates from October 11 to October 20. Listeria infections can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, according to the FDA.

"As an owner of this company and a mom, providing safe and healthy foods to our consumers and their families is always our top priority", Gina Nucci, director of corporate marketing for Mann's Packing, said in a written statement Thursday.

Consumers who have bought any of the food should throw it away or return it to where they bought it for a full refund.

"Mann Packing is issuing this recall out of an abundance of caution", the company said in a statement, adding that it is cooperating with USA and Canadian health officials to recall the products. So far, health officials have not reported any illnesses associated with these products.
