According to DownDetector, problems were reported in the US, UK and countries across Europe, including Italy, France, Germany and The Netherlands.

Naturally, many people took to Twitter to query what was wrong with Facebook (and express their anguish through gifs).

Popular social media website Facebook is experiencing widespread outages Wednesday morning, October 11, 2017.

Around 11:11 a.m. EST, users began to report issues and it appears that the outage has spread.

Facebook and Instagram have suffered a global outage.

There are also reports of problems with Instagram, which is owned by Facebook.

A spokesperson said: "We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram".

Outage Report said it has received more than 8,000 complaints regarding both social network sites and categorized the incidents as "extreme".

The issue is a global one with people suffering social media downtime in South America, parts of Asia and Europe.
