Anupam Kher is new FTII Chairman, replaces Gajendra Chauhan

Anupam Kher appt Chairman, FTII

Centre replaces Gajendra Chauhan with Anupam Kher as FTII Chairman

His appointment had triggered student protests at the Pune-based institute.

The appointment has been made by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which is headed by Smriti Irani. An alumnus of National School of Drama, he has also served as the Chairman of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in the past.

They had opposed Chauhans appointment, saying he lacked the "vision and artistic credentials" to merit the post at the prestigious institute. "But certainly FTII needs somebody who is much more qualified than whatever Ganjendraji's qualifications are coming across".

The 62-year-old critically acclaimed actor has over 500 films and plays to his credit, including worldwide projects like Bend It Life Beckham and the Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook.

Anupam Kher is popularly known for his films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Ram Lakhan, Dil, Tezaab and Beta. "What is your take now Mr. Kher @AnupamPkher?", Chauhan had tweeted on September 17. "In FTII, it's more important to be a good administrator than a good actor", Chauhan told IANS over phone from Mumbai. "I want to interact with students to understand their requirements, and along with faculties, I would be helping students for their betterment", said Anupam, a vociferous BJP supporter. However, Kumar stated that he does not see any difference between the appointment of Kher and that of Chauhan as the primary qualification seems to be their proximity to BJP or RSS. However, we are sure that he would do a commendable job and with his experience, commitment, dedication, and charisma the students of FTII will definitely be rewarded. Student leaders who have left the institute are still undergoing trials in Pune court for a case of forceful confinement of then Director, FTII in August 2015. But at the same time the statements that he has made over the last three years also can't be ignored.
