Fast forward to this morning and distributor A24 has released the first full-length trailer for The Disaster Artist, which is based on Greg Sestero's best-selling tell-all about the making of Tommy Wiseau's cult-classic disasterpiece The Room, perhaps one of the most well-known, weird midnight movies of all time. It tells the tale of Wiseau who was more a profound artist in his own mind than reality, who made a decision to write, direct and star in a semi-autobiographical film. "And he said, 'Why are you laughing?' I said, 'I don't know, dude". We're hoping the movie is as great as the cast. When Greg Sestero suggested that Franco should star in the film, Tommy Wiseau was fine with it. They understand kinship, having a shorthand, and lifting the other person up when they're feeling down. It's a film so weird and so odd that only the team of James Franco, Dave Franco and Seth Rogen could do a biopic on the film justice.
By keeping the focus on the emotions of its lead characters, The Disaster Artist finds a surprising honesty that goes far beyond simple appreciation for The Room. Based on its positive reception, A24 gave the film an awards-friendly release date of December 1.
Sometimes life imitates art, and sometimes art imitates, well, The Room.
"It was actually the first night I met Greg Sestero, the other actor in 'The Room, ' and we started the conversation about making this movie". Rather than exist as the butt of the joke, he decided to make the joke his own. James pressed Wiseau to see what he thought about his portrayal in The Disaster Artist, and Wiseau just laughed: "Oh, come on!"
The official trailer for THE DISASTER ARTIST was released today.
