'Wonder Woman' conquers milestone with $100.5 million debut

And with an insanely successful opening weekend at the box office, it's already propelled past one of the most disappointing films in the genre's modern era. But the opening weekend for "Wonder Woman" is an achievement for female filmmakers and for the industry, says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. Before "Wonder Woman", Jenkins' only feature was "Monster" - an Academy Award victor that she made more than a decade ago with an $8 million budget. Soon, Diana leaves the island to try and stop the war, marking the beginning of her transformation into Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot in the titular role, becomes only the 16th superhero title to launch to $100 million or more domestically, not adjusting for inflation. "Clearly, this is a movie that is resonating with moviegoers around the globe", said Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Jeff Goldstein.

"Wonder Woman" also badly beat every other movie in theaters this weekend.

Coming in at No. 2 was the animated film Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie - starring the voices of Ed Helms, Jordan Peele, and Nick Kroll - earning an estimated $23.5 million.

Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" should land in third this weekend with about $22 million from 4,276 locations. The film made just $219 million on a budget of $200 million, making it a costly flop and prompting the studio to cancel the plans for the sequel.

The film's worldwide opening is better than the first two Iron Man movies, the first two Thor movies, both of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Man of Steel.

In limited release, "3 Idiotas" from Lionsgate and Pantelion will make $600,000 from 349 locations. It's time. Then I realized that Wonder Woman 2 is its own great movie.

"Wonder Woman", though, pushed the week's box office up 30 percent over the same week past year, according to comScore. This could be crucial to the film's overall performance at the box office.
