Mr Trump insisted that Mr Comey lied in some parts of the testimony he gave on Thursday to the Senate intelligence committee.

In referring to Comey, Trump was citing the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's acknowledgment that he had asked a friend to leak his memos about his conversations with the president.

Now that silence has been well and truly broken.

"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication... and WOW, Comey is a leaker!" the President said on Twitter this morning.

He followed up that pronouncement by tweeting his appreciation for the news coverage of the Fox News channel with regard to Comey.

Robert Mueller, who served as FBI director for the Bush and Obama administrations from 2001 to 2013, has been appointed as a special counsel to oversee the investigation into the Russian Federation probe.

Comey testified that President Donald Trump had expressed hope he would end an FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Obstruction of justice requires a prosecutor to prove President Trump had a corrupt intent to impede justice, said Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center.

In his public testimony, Comey did not disclose any links between Trump advisers and alleged Russian attempts to meddle in the 2016 US presidential election, an issue that has distracted from White House policy goals such as overhauling the USA healthcare system and cutting taxes. "I took it as a very disturbing thing, very concerning".

"Lordy, I hope there are tapes", Comey said, suggesting such evidence would back up his account over the president's.

He then dove into the heart of the fraught political controversy around his firing and whether Trump interfered in the bureau's Russian Federation investigation, as he elaborated on written testimony released a day earlier. He told the Senate panel he took meticulous notes of each meeting or conversation he had with Trump because "I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting, and so I thought it really important to document". Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) if he believed Trump "colluded with Russia", Olbermann quoted Comey as saying: "That's a question I don't think I should answer in an open setting. but that's a question that will be answered by the investigation, I think".

While the president was silent on Twitter during Comey's testimony, one of his sons, Donald J. Trump Jr., filled the void.
