"It would be standard practice for the special counsel to examine financial records to look for anything related to Russian Federation".
Mueller has assembled a high-powered team of top investigators and leading experts, including seasoned attorneys who've represented major American companies in court and who have worked on cases ranging from Watergate to the Enron fraud scandal.
But then Rosenstein made the surprise move to appoint Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead the Russian Federation investigation, a development that people close to Sessions and Trump believe has worsened matters for everyone involved.
The president didn't clarify what exactly he was referring to in the early morning tweet, however he has frequently described reports about possible ties between members of his campaign and Russian Federation as a "witch hunt".
People familiar with the matter told the Post that the obstruction of justice probe started in the wake of Trump's firing of Comey.
Trump later telephoned Coats and Rogers to separately ask them to issue public statements denying that there was any evidence of coordination between Trump's campaign and Russian officials.
Angered by reports in Breitbart News and other conservative news outlets that Mr. Mueller was close to Mr. Comey, Mr. Trump in recent days has repeatedly brought up the political and legal implications of firing someone he now views as incapable of an impartial investigation.
But people close to Mr. Trump say he is so volatile they can not be sure that he will not change his mind about Mr. Mueller if he finds out anything to lead him to believe the investigation has been compromised.
The memos, wrote the Federal Bureau of Investigation, "are law enforcement records".
In a tweet Thursday morning, Trump, who has been putting together his own team of outside lawyers to represent him, called the Post's report Wednesday that he is being investigated for collusion "phony".
"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. Nice", the President tweeted.
Trump wrote, "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!" In a statement, the National Security Agency said it "will fully cooperate with the special counsel", but declined to comment further.
That news was also reported by the Washington Post. "The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", he said. Comey testified that the member of his leadership team said that although it was true at the moment that Trump was not under investigation, it was possible that could change.
Ruddy, who had been at the White House on Monday, told PBS that Trump is considering terminating the special counsel. Miller said it could be in Trump's best interest if Mueller moves quickly with the probe.
