The GOP house majority whip is recovering at the Medstar Washington Hospital Centre after being shot in the left hip.

After visiting Scalise Wednesday evening at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Trump tweeted: "Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter". He sustained "a single rifle shot to the left hip" that "travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding", the hospital said in a statement.

Top Republican politician Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded from critical to serious after he was gunned down at a party baseball practice outside Washington.

Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone. The trauma director said it was too soon to estimate how long hospitalization would be necessary. The fact that his injuries brought him close to death was not widely known initially.

The hospital says the Louisiana congressman "will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

"I feel a lot more optimistic than I do two or three days ago", Sava said.

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at Wednesday's practice and gave medical help after the shooting, said it would have "been awful" if the game had been canceled, and said Scalise would want it to go on.

"There is more risk involved in removing them". He said doctors have turned down Mr Scalise's sedation levels enough that he has been able to respond to visiting family members.

Colleagues said Scalise, who had been fielding balls at second base, dragged himself away from the infield, leaving a trail of blood before they rushed to his assistance. Hodgkinson was shot by police and died of his injuries.

Sava said he is encouraged by Scalise's improvement.

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events". Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was too early to determine a motive in the shooting or whether the attack was an attempted political assassination.

Duncan has said he spoke with Hodgkinson just before the shooting. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content.

But Flake said the final score wasn't likely to matter this year.

He also said that Officer Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle, is in "good condition". On Friday, Bailey was spotted back in the Capitol building, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot in the chest at the baseball practice.
