Scalise remained in critical condition at a local hospital, his family by his side, grievously wounded by a bullet that entered at the hip and injured internal organs.

Donations from the game will go toward Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, The Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, The Washington Literacy Center and The Capitol Police Memorial Fund. The hospital did not immediately provide an update, but lawmakers were informed at a meeting Thursday morning that Scalise was in surgery.

Even so, a poignant and immovable shadow cast itself over Thursday's annual congressional baseball game.

Since the shooting, members of Congress have spoken about a need for unity, at a time when polarization seems to be at an all-time high. Jeff Flake was with Rep. Steve Scalise when he was shot, and has been checking in on him. There were reports of death threats being called in to congressional Democrats and Republicans alike.

Members of Congress took the field at Washington's Nationals Park on Thursday night for the game, many wearing hats to honor Scalise. That's why Democrats' and Republicans' decision to go ahead with their baseball game on Thursday in Washington is so welcome.

Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner also remains at the MedStar Washington hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to her ankle, but is in "good condition and good spirits" the hospital said.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise remains in critical condition but is showing signs of improvement after sustaining injuries during a shooting at the GOP's congressional baseball practice Wednesday, Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at MedSTAR Washington Hospital Center, said Friday.

"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", the president said.

"We're especially thankful for the courageous police officers that ran into danger without regard to their personal safety", Pence said.

Speaking before Central American leaders at a prosperity and security conference organized by the State Department and Homeland Security Department here, Pence said he and President Donald Trump were "deeply saddened" when they received the news Wednesday.

Yesterday morning, police say, Hodgkinson fired dozens of bullets at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., wounding five, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La.

Almost 25,000 tickets were sold for the game and it was on track to raise more than $1 million, roughly double what it did a year ago, organizers said.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump said.

The Democrats won the game, 11-2, but loaned the trophy to the Republicans until Scalise is better. He said Republicans were on the field, shortly before the gunman began shooting at them.

On Wednesday night, Trump, accompanied by first lady Melania Trump, visited Scalise at the hospital.

"He's in some trouble", said Trump, who had visited late Wednesday.
