"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said.

"The congressman's status remains critical", Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the Washington Hospital Center, told reporters.

Scalise has undergone multiple surgeries and will need more. Sava didn't address what organs were damaged.

As his colleagues played baseball in his honor Thursday evening, MedStar Washington Hospital Center medical gave an update on Rep. Steve Scalise, who remains in critical condition but has improved.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

"He will certainly be in the hospital for a considerable period of time", he said.

His family said they appreciate the support they've received from lawmakers and the president, and are thankful for the bravery of the special agents. "The congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

"We all owe Steve a big, big thank you", Trump added. Scalise was hit as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice outside Washington D.C.

Scalise is being treated in the hospital's intensive care unit. He was shot in the hip but the bullet tore through his pelvis and injured internal organs.

Trump's comments came at the beginning of his speech in Miami Friday announcing a partial rollback of ties to Cuba - reversing changes made by President Barack Obama's administration.

The hospital released the statement on behalf of Scalise's family.

President Donald Trump called for unity in the aftermath of Wednesday's shooting at a GOP baseball practice in Alexandria that has left Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise in a critical condition. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content. He's been undergoing repeat surgeries.

The Congressional Baseball Game, an annual tradition, went on as planned Thursday.
