It may have taken an age to hammer out the deal, but Manchester City have finally confirmed the arrival of Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson from Benfica.

City manager Pep Guardiola signed Chile global goalkeeper Claudio Bravo from Barcelona last August but his form was patchy throughout the season.

City said Ederson will officially join the club on July 1, and he is expected to be Guardiola's first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Bravo.

Speaking on his move Ederson told the club's official website: "I like everything about Manchester City".

This is a great club, they have unbelievable fans and they play splendid football.

Joe Hart remains on City's books after a season on loan at Torino but will probably be sold before the start of the season. He is putting in place a young team for the future.

Ederson is the second major signing of the close-season for City following their purchase of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva for a reported 43 million pounds ($55 million) from Monaco. Those were important factors in making my decision. "He is one of the best young goalkeepers in the Europe and he is an important addition to the squad for next season and the coming seasons", he said. At the lower-league side he caught the eye of Portuguese giants Benfica, who got a five-year contract in 2015.

He is uncapped at senior level, but was named in Brazil's squad for their upcoming friendlies against Argentina and Australia in Melbourne.

In attempting to fix his goalkeeper woes, Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has turned to a goal-scoring "sweeper keeper" with a booming kick, the skills of an outfield player and a reputation for excelling in point-blank saves.

Despite some inconsistent form, City finished third in the Premier League last season, qualifying for the Champions League.
