In Trump's private moments, it is small talk and compliments

According to the Times of Israel, son-in-law and aide to the USA president, Jared Kushner, told Israeli opposition leader Isaac Herzog on Tuesday, before their departure, that the White House was preparing to quickly act on promises made to restart peace talks between the Israel and the Palestinians.

There was no specific mention in any of Trump's remarks in Israel to "occupation" or the "two-state solution" - a pair of major sticking points for the Palestinians. On Monday, he met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, and departed for Rome on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Trump's speech came after he met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank earlier in the day.

In recent days, USA officials have emphasized to their Israeli counterparts that Trump remains committed to relocating the embassy by the end of his first term, even if he decides next month to extend the presidential order freezing the implementation of the move. His visit to Saudi Arabia, and speech to leaders from over 50 majority-Muslim countries on Sunday, is reflective of that.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: So many young, beautiful, innocent people living and enjoying their lives, murdered by evil losers.

KEITH: He was really there to talk about peace.

In a press conference with Abbas Tuesday morning, he reiterated, "I have committed to try to reach a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians", speaking only in general terms. It seemed to me like they were weaponizing the Old City walls.

Trump, on a tour that has already taken him to Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Palestinian territories, touched down in the Italian capital aboard Air Force One just before 1630 GMT, an AFP staffer travelling with the presidential team said.

A group of left-wing Israeli protesters also attempted to prevent the marchers from entering the Old City by linking arms and blocking the entrance of the Damascus Gate.

Trump initially sparked deep concern among Palestinians when he backed away from the long USA commitment to a two-state solution to the conflict.

During his election campaign, Trump also advocated breaking with decades of precedent and moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, alarming Palestinians.

Israel annexed east Jerusalem and the contested Temple Mount, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.

Jews are allowed to visit but not pray there to avoid provoking tensions, but Palestinians fear Israel will seek to assert further control over the site. They're losers, and we'll have more of them.

The Palestinians see east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.
