School choice legislation allows parents to send their children to the public school, charter school, or private school that best suits their educational needs.

"I don't think it's fair to treat Ms. DeVos any differently than we did (former) President Obama's secretaries", said Alexander.

"To level an accusation against her about these words included in responses to almost 1,400 questions-139 alone from the ranking member-is simply a desperate attempt to discredit Betsy DeVos, who will serve the Department of Education and our nation's children with distinction if confirmed", Goad, who sits on the White House Domestic Policy Council, told CNN. Even some school reformers who support education views that are similar to DeVos's have come out against her, questioning her stated desire to help traditional public schools improve. However, the White House's lack of response seems to be generating distrust in media sources and officials, who are waiting for a clear answer.

Dr. Hynes fears that Trump might cut federal funding from districts based on their opt-out rates. DeVos has worked for decades to expand school choice in MI. More than half are from Long Island.

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions is scheduled to vote Tuesday on her nomination. Until then, the nation is reeling because of unanswered questions and serious accusations. During her January 17 confirmation hearing, DeVos denied any prior support for (and says she does not now support) "conversion therapy" for gays, and stressed that she wanted all children to go to school in a safe, bullying-free environment. Senate Democrats have requested the vote be delayed so they can hold additional hearings with DeVos.

Pointing to stumbles by DeVos at the committee's confirmation hearing for DeVost two weeks ago, Hassan said "her lack of knowledge and understanding of America's public school system during the hearings was astonishing".

A vote on DeVos' confirmation is expected some time next week.

DeVos wrote in her responses that the OCR "is statutorily authorized to collect or coordinate the collection of data necessary to ensure compliance with civil rights laws within the jurisdiction of OCR".

"I can not think of a more effective and passionate change agent to press for a new education vision, one in which students, rather than adults and bureaucracies, become the priority in our nation's classrooms", said former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, an education powerhouse in the Sunshine State.

"Do note, she has not yet earned my full support", Murkowski said during Tuesday's hearing.

What we need in education is someone who has teaching experience, especially in marginalized neighborhoods.

"How about we put a vote for Betsy DeVos on the line?"
