The ability to do burnouts in your three-row SUV isn't usually high on the priorities list of most buyers, but then the 2018 Dodge Durango SRT is no ordinary family vehicle. The muscle auto is actually the 2018 Durango SRT three-row SUV with a 475-horsepower HEMI V-8 engine.
The Durango SRT will boast 8,600 pounds of towing capacity, exceeding any other full-size SUV, according to Fiat Chrysler.
It will begin arriving in dealerships during the fourth quarter of this year.
A stream of American releases came earlier today with the start of the Chicago Auto Show 2017.
The Durango SRT has seven drive modes: Street, Track, Sport, Snow, Tow, Eco, and Valet.
The front end of the SRT Durango is finished off with a unique mesh grille design with the SRT logo, a new thin grille opening just below it (similar to the SRT Jeep) and the darkened headlights from the Durango R/T.
Before Dodge eventually lets the world in on what exactly the Challenger Demon is capable of, they've gone and stuck a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 under the bonnet of a land yacht called the Durango. "This is what you get, when you take everything great about the Durango and combine it with the performance of the Charger SRT: a 12-second quarter mile, toy-hauling, three-row muscle auto".
SRT-specific styling cues are on the subtle side: the hood sports functional air inlets and heat extractors, and that cold-air intake shares a revised front fascia and valance with LED foglights. Brakes are six-piston Brembos in front and four-piston calipers in back. A track drive mode commands the eight-speed transmission to make 160-millisecond shifts, while a milder sport mode cuts shift times by 50 percent compared to normal mode.
The quickest of GM's big Cadillac Escalade/Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon SUVs can't come close to the performance we expect from the SRT Dodge.
For drivers keen on exploiting the Durango's impressive performance, Dodge says all SRT buyers will get a one-day instruction session at Arizona's Bob Bondurant School of High-Performance Driving. You can debate whether a three-row body-on-frame family vehicle out since 2014 needed SRT treatment, but you will get no sympathy from Kuniskis. The valves for the active dampers open and close at different frequencies, depending on which mode the Dodge is in, while the springs and rear sway bar have all been stiffened for better handling overall.
Interior upgrades include a flat-bottomed steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats and a centre stack and console trimmed in "light black chrome".
With the typically reserved nature of SRT-badged Dodges, there's "Demonic Red Laguna" leather on the inside and a series of bulges, ducts and scoops on the outside.
