Some viewers joked that Laurie deliberately ignored Hiddletson because he is a fan of his ex - Taylor Swift.

The actor seemed genuinely stunned to have beaten out talent including John Travolta and Sterling K. Brown in "The People v. O.J. Simpson" and Christian Slater in "Mr. Robot".

So says the Hollywood Foreign Press, which awarded the actor the Golden Globe for Supporting Actor in a TV Drama, Comedy, Musical, Miniseries or Movie.

"I won at the last ever Golden Globes", Laurie told the crowd. "I don't mean to be gloomy, it's just that it has "Hollywood, Foreign and Press" in the title". Hugh Laurie's anti-Trump joke at the Golden Globes didn't mention Trump by name, but everyone knew just who Laurie was referring to.

Three of the five are Cambridge graduates, and all three won their awards for roles in the BBC's The Night Manager.

Pausing for a second after receiving a loud applause, Laurie continued, "I also think that to some Republicans even the word "association" is highly sketchy".

Colman was unable to attend the event, but Hiddleston and Laurie both used their acceptance speeches as platforms to make a statement.

He recalled meeting a group of doctors and nurses with Doctors Without Borders who said they had binged watched "The Night Manager".

In the TV section, The Night Manager was the biggest victor. Hiddleston said he was moved by "the idea that we could provide some relief and entertainment for people... who are fixing the world in the places where it is broken".
