Furyk named US Ryder Cup captain

The PGA of America announced Wednesday that Jim Furyk will captain the 2018 U.S.

Fred Couples was also a leadership contender for the match at Le Golf National near Paris but Furyk, a vice-captain to Love a year ago, was the preferred choice of the US Ryder Cup committee.

Furyk has 17 PGA Tour titles in a career spanning 25 years, including major success at the 2003 US Open, and Beem feels the 46-year-old has all the attributes to be successful in the role.

Love will be one of his assistants in France. Davis is going to be a tough act to follow. Last summer, Furyk became the first player to shoot 58 in a PGA Tour event. He put the players behind it. It won't make my task easy.

"The experiences this event gives me, I get chills thinking about it and to be sitting here as captain is a great honour".

He holds the record with Phil Mickelson of the most US Ryder Cup matches lost (20).

Part of that model was to allow for more consistency at each Ryder Cup, such as captains previously serving as assistants.

"I would like to thank Davis and the PGA of America Ryder Cup Committee for their faith in me and my selection as United States Ryder Cup captain", Furyk said in the statement. Furyk, 46, is now No. 37 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

He added the board felt Furyk had a lot of offer the team. "But I view it as an opportunity".

With his nine appearances in the event, he will be the most experienced captain the usa team has ever had. He was a vice captain for Love previous year. Furyk had shot 59 at the BMW Championship three years earlier. He played on only two winning teams, in 1999 and then in 2008. I don't want to say no but my main focus is on being a captain'. "Worrying about points and where my game is really putting the cart before the horse". With nine Ryder Cups as a player to his name, he will be the most experienced captain in US Ryder Cup history.

Thomas Bjorn is the European skipper in 2018 and Furyk can't wait to pit his wits against his "friend".

Furyk is now world No 37 and a regular competitor on the PGA Tour, but Beem doesn't believe it's possible to split playing and captaincy commitments. The two never faced each other in the Ryder Cup as players.

No captain before him has played in as many Ryder Cups as Furyk has.

"He's something I look forward to sharing this process against".
