State and local leaders joined executives from NextEra Energy Resources and its partners to commission the Blythe and McCoy Solar Energy Centers, which created hundreds of construction jobs and will assist California meet its renewable energy aims.
The US and Israel have announced a US$4 million fund for five clean energy projects, including solar PV and CSP, as part of the Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) programme. Together, they have a generating capacity of 485 megawatts, capable of powering more than 181,000 homes.
Once commissioned, the project will generate enough electricity to meet the demand of around 7,700 households and offset around 252,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
The solar arrays of the projects are spread over 4,000 acres of land in Riverside County, with the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) managing majority. "These projects are evidence of what we can do when we build strong partnerships to develop renewable energy, protect the environment and create good jobs and long-term benefits for our communities".
"This new rule not only provides a strong foundation for the future of energy development on America's public lands, but is an important and exciting milestone in our ongoing efforts to tap the vast solar and wind energy resources across the country", said Secretary Jewell.
By prioritizing development in designated "low-conflict areas" where there is general agreement about development, the rule should make the permitting process more efficient while protecting wildlands and wildlife habitat from development, said Alex Daue of the Wilderness Society, an environmental group. While Minnesota's state energy policies have been a large driver in the shift from fossil fuels to renewables, the federal Production Tax Credit and Investment Tax Credit have played a major role in shaping the state's clean energy economy while keeping rates affordable for utility customers, according to a new report from the University of Minnesota Energy Transition Lab.
The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) recently came out against the final rule issued by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) governing wind and solar energy development on public lands.
St. Olaf College will soon run completely on renewable wind energy.
