Eagles veteran linebackers Mychal Kendricks and Stephen Tulloch got action in the first quarter. Smith has worked his way up the cornerback depth chart. (This seems entirely possible.) Or the Jets could straight-up keep four quarterbacks on their 53-man active roster.
Robby Anderson, though he didn't catch a bunch of passes, likely secured a roster spot with his performance. It is whether the Jets will think he is worth putting onto the practice squad.
Beyond quarterbacks, the other most interesting roster decisions for the Jets are at wide receiver and tight end.
Jalin Marshall: I really wanted to believe in Marshall when I heard buzz at the start of training camp, but his preseason was very underwhelming. It was all about figuring out who to cut.
It was the first time Hackenberg was at the Linc since playing for Penn State during a 27-10 loss to Temple in last year's opener for both teams. His pressure led to Reynolds' TD return. Even by the standards of a meaningless preseason game populated by second- and third-stringers, it's a stunningly-awful line. If Green-Beckham can keep his head in the game and play to his potential, it could prove to be one of the best moves Howie Roseman has ever made. The receiver still doesn't have the entire playbook opened up to him, but he knows more than he did last week, and you can bet Doug Pederson will want to target him again in the red zone.
When asked if there's anything more he could have done this preseason, Means mentioned there were a few plays where he should have gotten his hands up to deflect a pass instead of going for a hit. He also intends to donate $1 million "to different organizations to help these communities and help these people", declining to provide specifics. "I've been replaying so many different ways". Pederson said the uncertainty makes things hard for continuity.
"We have not yet met today", the coach said.
Next year's draft is scheduled for April 27-29.
Although majority have very little experience, the wide receivers are embracing being one of the youngest group at the position in modern history, pens Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com. He also had some responsibility for the punt return touchdown. David Watford, Cayleb Jones and Marcus Johnson are all 22 or 23.
The first half observations (full of some Paul Turner goodness) are here.
"It's insane", Matthews said. Now, me and Josh are the oldest.
"It's something I plan to keep on doing until I feel like justice has been served", Lane said. I saw some things that they can work on. "The transformation I have seen from his rookie season to this year has been monumental, and clearly I am not the only one to notice this".
