Bill Belichick wears a Nate Ebner jersey to practice

The U.S. men's rugby team are the defending Olympic champions - even though that last gold medal came almost a century ago. Danny Barrett scored first for the USA against Fiji but the Americans went into the break trailing 12-7.

The U.S. placed ninth overall in the tournament after falling to top-seeded Fiji, 24-19 on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old National Football League player, Patriots safety, stepped onto the playing field of USA Rugby sevens during the second half of the match against Argentina on Tuesday afternoon, for the first time. But USA Rugby's conversion kick attempt missed, and that proved the difference.

Last night, Ryan Seacrest invited USA women's rugby sevens player Jillion Potter to teach actor Matthew McConaughey the basics of rugby sevens. There is no set date on when Ebner will return to the team.

Ebner said he thinks of his father all the time but he didn't venture a guess as to what his father would think of his boy making it to the Olympics.

Ebner, who also worked on special teams to help the Patriots capture Super Bowl XLIX a year ago, was given permission by the team last March to chase his Olympic dream, making him the only National Football League (NFL) player with a chance to capture gold in Brazil. He ranked third on the club previous year with 11 special-teams tackles. "I appreciate it", he said. Really, it's going to be up to the people in the United States and how they respond to what they've seen and kids getting out there playing.

Ebner admitted to being quite overwhelmed by his maiden Olympic participation.

The Japanese players say this Olympics will help them prepare for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. He wrote an e-mail to a US rubgy official, introducing himself. "I can only imagine people who haven't seen [rugby], it's got to be exciting to watch".
