"T$3 here was a picture on the front page of the National Enquirer, which does have credibility", Trump said, reminding reporters that he has called for the tabloid to win rewards for its reporting on John Edwards. "I think he's a lovely guy", Trump said at a morning-after rally in Cleveland.
Donald Trump denied insulting Sen.
For the record, the photo in question does not show Oswald and anybody "having breakfast".
"I don't know his father".
Note the parsing of words. Why does he cling to it even now, saying falsely that Cruz never disavowed it. The allegation that Rafael Cruz was in the picture with Oswald has been widely debunked by fact checkers.
That's the thin reed upon which this story hangs.
Nonetheless, Trump proclaimed in a May 3 interview on "Fox and Friends" that Cruz's "father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald's being, you know, shot!"
"I just had to clear it up, I think I'm doing the right thing in doing it, but I had to do it", he said.
"Nobody even brings it up". They don't even talk about that.... Now, I'm not saying anything. "All I did is point out the fact that on the cover of the National Enquirer there was a picture of him and insane Lee Harvey Oswald having breakfast".
This is the first day of Donald J. Trump's general election campaign.
Trump started by disputing Cruz's claim that he had run by his speech before his people and that it was approved. The catcalls and chants of "Endorse Trump", forced Cruz to ask for calm, by larking that he appreciated the NY delegation's enthusiasm. "If he gives it, I will not accept it".
"All I did was point out that on the cover of the National Enquirer there was a picture of him and insane Lee Harvey Oswald having breakfast". "I had nothing to do with it".
Contra Clarice Feldman and the other Trump apologists, the Trump-Cruz contretemps at the convention last week says a lot more about Trump's skills as a negotiator than it does about Cruz's pride and pettiness. If that was the New York Times, they would've gotten Pulitzer Prizes for their reporting.
What the Warren Commission discovered was that the two men pictured with Oswald (one on TV footage) were distributing "Fair Play for Cuba" flyers.
Trump's supporters don't care so long as Trump will solve their fears for their economic and physical safety. Except I might have pointed it out, but it had nothing to do with me, I have no control over anything. No "might" about it. Trump did "point it out" on national TV, and he definitively proclaimed the man in the picture to be Rafael Cruz, even though the text of the National Enquirer story doesn't go quite that far. "This is just kooky", Cruz said. That is, he linked Cruz's father to President John F. Kennedy's assassination. But nobody ever denied - did anyone ever deny that it was his father? It's a little hard to do, because it looks like him. "It looks like him". Still, a spokesman did call the whole thing a "garbage story in a tabloid full of garbage" when it saw the light of day.
"It's ludicrous, it's ludicrous", Rafael Cruz told ABC News on May 3. "I was never in New Orleans at that time". He spent at least ten minutes laying into Cruz and relitigating the Heidi Cruz insult and the accusation that Cruz's dad was somehow involved with the JFK assassination. "Now, let's be clear, this is nuts". This is not a responsible position. Ted Cruz's speech Wednesday night, where Cruz, who finished second in the Republican primaries, urged delegates to vote their conscience and got booed. Lieberman said the photos "seem to match", and Goldstone commented, "There's more similarity than dissimilarity". "Or, you could support Ted Cruz on Tuesday". And there is still no evidence - at all - that the man in the photo with Oswald is Rafael Cruz.
