Game of Thrones gets 23 Emmy nominations

I'd also like to congratulate our competitors on their successes and to express appreciation to the TV Academy and its voters for celebrating the full breadth of television's current diversity and ambition. Even in a golden age of TV, though, Game of Thrones seems unbeatable.

Veep's tally skyrocketed, from 9 nominations a year ago, to 17, second only to GOT among regular series. Let's look at some of the telling signs revealed within this year's crop of Emmy nominations.

The nominees were announced Thursday by Anthony Anderson and Lauren Graham. Game Of Thrones on HBO gained the principal nomination for the Best Drama Series slot once more.

It's Christmas in July for Netflix: The company this week wracked up a cool 54 Emmy nominations, behind only HBO (94) and FX (56) in total nods for 2016.

There were more than 400 scripted series previous year.

Amazon received 16 nods, up from last year's 12, for shows including "Transparent", "Mozart In The Jungle" and "Catastrophe". "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" also picked up two nominations, including Outstanding Variety Talk Series.

Broadcast and cable are far from irrelevant.

Anthony Anderson was over the moon about his show getting a best comedy nomination. He helped announce the awards live and read his show's name with relish.

"I felt really creatively stimulated this year", said Maslany. “When hope becomes reality, thats what it is. "I was just a 9-year-old kid growing up in Compton, California, with a dream and this is the dream that I had".

This year's Drama and Comedy Series nominees include first-timers as well as returning programmes to the Emmy competition: "black-ish" and "Master of None" are new in the Outstanding Comedy Series category, and "Mr. Robot" and "The Americans" in the Outstanding Drama Series competition.

What was your initial reaction to FX's record-breaking Emmy nominations?

Closely on the heels of the fantasy-drama is American Crime Story: The People vs OJ Simpson, with 22 nominations, including the acting categories and Outstanding Limited Series. It recounts the football legend's sensational, racially charged trial for the slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman.

Veteran actor Max von Sydow also received an Emmy nomination in the Oustanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series prize for his performance as the Three-eyed raven.

Speaking as he completed a Star Trek mural in Clerkenwell in London, he said: "I wasn't expecting that".

Her husband and co-star Matthew Rhys was named in the Best Actor category for drama, along with Kyle Chandler (Bloodline), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Kevin Spacey (House Of Cards), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) and Rami Malek (Mr Robot).
