Manchester United has fired manager Louis van Gaal after two turbulent years at the English Premier League club.
"I'd like to thank Louis and his staff for their excellent work in the past two years culminating in winning a record-equalling 12th FA Cup for the club (and securing him a title in four different countries)", executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said in a statement on the club website.
Van Gaal did manage to guide the club to FA Cup glory but it was largely seen as a disappointing season for the club.
"I believe that the foundations are firmly in place to enable the club to move forward and achieve even greater success", said the Dutchman, 64.
Leads United to a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace after extra time in the FA Cup final at Wembley, their first major trophy for three years.
The Red Devils finished seventh the season before van Gaal arrived, and he instantly returned them to fourth place and the UEFA Champions League.
FC's Steve Nicol and Shaka Hislop call Manchester United "classless" after rumours of Jose Mourinho's hiring leaked out shortly after the FA Cup final.
Mourinho was also in London over the weekend attending a boxing match but refused to speak to reporters.
Some media weren't convinced about the appointment of the brash Portuguese, who despite his success, has a reputation for alienating players and waging public feuds with adversaries.
"It's a pattern with Jose, he comes into a club, he gets success but he doesn't stay for too long".
Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea last December, just seven months after leading the London club to the Premier League title.
"He's a proven victor, a proven champion", Neville said. But Van Gaal's turbulent tenure has been marred by accusations from critics that he betrayed United's heritage by playing a defensive, risk-averse style.
With Van Gaal gone and Mourinho in, United will need to re-evaluate where they stand, after finishing fifth in the EPL and just earning a Europa League spot.
A decision on a successor as manager will be announced soon, said the club's website.
